The old Anna Maria Island Jail was built in 1927 to house rambunctious bar-goers who caused disturbances late at night. They were subjected to a night of mosquitos and most of the elements behind bars, covered only by a wooden roof. In the 1940’s the jail caught fire and has since been used as a photo-op for visitors and locals alike. To many, it is a reminder of how simple the Island life was to need such a small jail area and only to house slightly drunk people who needed to cool off after a long night.
